LCAC speed does not erase vulnerability

The LCAC is a fast and useful connector, but its value depends on whether the route and beach remain sufficiently controlled.

Question

Is the United States Navy too dependent on LCACs?

Short answer

LCACs are fast and useful, but their advantages are clearest in a controlled environment and become less reassuring in a heavily contested approach.

Notes

The LCAC gives the United States far more connector speed than a conventional landing craft. Its survivability is less reassuring outside a benign or controlled environment. A fast hovercraft still has to cross a threatened route, reach a suitable beach, unload, and return for the next wave. The French fast-hull alternative raises the same trade among speed, payload, shore access, and exposure in contested littorals.
