The first missile waves deliberately collide with the carriers' defensive screen. Later salvos use gaps, radiation clouds, jamming and timed self-destruction to cross more of the defended zone before the carriers can reacquire them. The first battle group damages one carrier after expending hundreds of missiles. The second group then attacks through the weakened screen and destroys that carrier. Earlier weapons create the conditions for later hits even when they never reach the target themselves.

Layered missile salvos manufacture openings in strong defenses
The fleet does not expect every missile to hit; early waves clear screens, create radiation, and shape the path for later attacks.
