Backfire bombers and sea-skimming missiles drove a layered defence rather than reliance on one interceptor. Sea Harrier fighters formed the outer layer, Sea Dart supplied medium-range protection, and Sea Wolf provided short-range point defence. Electronic-support measures, radar jammers, and decoys were intended to detect hostile emissions and confuse missiles that penetrated the hard-kill layers. The offensive response spread Sub-Harpoon, Exocet, Sea Skua, and Sea Eagle across submarines, surface ships, helicopters, and aircraft. Fleet protection depended on a connected system of sensors, aircraft, missiles, electronic warfare, and counter-strike.
