Chapter · 31:31-34:46

Late Axis entry meets an already-mobilized alliance

Germany and Italy enter after months of Allied combat experience and mobilisation, including major war orders in the United States.

Notes

Germany and Italy would enter a conflict whose original participants had already adapted to wartime conditions. A major spring battle against Japan might release surviving British battleships for other theatres even if the Royal Navy would prefer to keep them east. Britain and France would have moved beyond peacetime habits, accumulated combat experience, expanded production, and placed major orders in the United States. Their losses would be real, but six months of war would also produce institutional learning and mobilisation. The late Axis entrants therefore face opponents that are damaged yet already mobilised and accustomed to fighting.
