The larger Invincible design Britain chose not to build

A classroom design exercise adds displacement and layered air defence to Invincible, then compares the result with real contemporary design studies.

Notes

Students are asked to enlarge the Invincible design by roughly 5,000 tons while retaining similar proportions and crew demands. The additional length and beam create room for Sea Dart and several Sea Wolf mounts, along with medium guns and Phalanx or Goalkeeper close-in weapons. Layering area, point, and close-in defence would produce a much harder target than the historical ship. The result offers substantially more combat value for a relatively modest growth in displacement and manpower. Comparable design studies existed, but political concern that the ship would look too much like a carrier helped prevent that path.
