A large gun destroyer still needs missiles

A 10,000-ton gun destroyer would waste its size if it omitted missiles, because a true destroyer needs both kinds of weapon for a general-purpose mission.

Question

Would a 10,000-ton gun destroyer make sense?

Short answer

Not as a gun-only ship. At that displacement it should carry missiles as well as guns so it can perform both offensive and defensive destroyer missions.

Notes

A 10,000-ton destroyer should have room for both guns and missiles in the preferred general-purpose design. Omitting either family leaves it short of the full set of weapons needed for offensive and defensive missions. The all-missile Type 22 frigates and proposals to remove the Type 42's gun illustrate the tensions behind that choice. Retaining a gun preserved useful tasks that missiles alone could not cover.
