Z1 to Z4 displaced 2,223 tons at standard load, compared with the Royal Navy Tribal class's 1,850 tons. Later Type 1934A batches varied in displacement and construction cost as German production continued to develop. Their size did not make them better gun platforms. At Narvik, heavy mounts and slower aiming kept the German ships from matching the volume of British fire. German crews were well trained, so the disparity cannot be explained simply by a lack of training or experience. More British guns firing more often exposed the Germans to a much greater cumulative weight of fire.

Large destroyers and Narvik firepower
German destroyers exceeded the Tribal class in displacement, while their gun platforms and mounts limited the fire they could return at Narvik.
