Landing craft can fire ashore, but recoil fights the hull

Tanks and artillery have fired from landing craft, but shallow flat-bottomed hulls are poor gun platforms and recoil can push them away from the beach.

Question

Could tanks lower a landing craft's ramp and fire at shore positions before beaching?

Short answer

Sometimes, but the flat-bottomed craft is an unstable gun platform and recoil can push it off its approach; rockets impose less recoil than cannon.

Notes

Artillery and tanks sometimes engaged shore targets from landing craft, including craft with sides low enough to fire over. A flat-bottomed connector lacks the restoring behaviour of a deeper seagoing hull and can roll or shift sharply under recoil. Fire directed over a lowered bow may also work against the craft's attempt to approach the beach. Rocket batteries reduce the recoil problem, which helps explain their use on specialist D-Day landing craft.
