Landing-craft crews and repeated assault runs

Landing-craft crews had to preserve their boats for repeated assault runs, often carrying several waves through the same defended approach.

Notes

Another attempt to reach the beach risked stranding the Higgins boat and preventing it from collecting the next wave. Landing-craft crews repeatedly crossed the assault route because their work continued after the first troops reached shore. Craft in the first wave could carry the third or fourth wave as well, depending on distance and turnaround time. Troops could seek cover ashore while the boat crews returned through the danger to deliver more men.
