Why the land campaign shapes the naval story

Force Z's choices grew out of a land campaign whose reverses narrowed every British option.

Notes

Malaya forms a connected land-and-sea campaign, and the loss of Force Z cannot be isolated from events ashore. The comparison with Norway and Crete points to a recurring problem: naval forces must react when an army is under pressure and bases are threatened. Force Z's sortie therefore appears as a response to an invasion already reshaping British choices on land and in the air. That joint-campaign frame matters for judging Admiral Tom Phillips's options later in the episode.
