Lady Blanche and Rochester's battlement legend

Rochester's Lady Blanche story turns disguise, jealousy, and an accidental arrow strike into a white-lady haunting associated with the battlements.

Notes

The Rochester legend is set during the castle fighting of 1264. Gilbert de Clare, jealous after Lady Blanche rejected him, allegedly enters in armor resembling that of her intended husband, Ralph de Capo. When Ralph returns and shoots at Gilbert, the arrow glances from the armor and kills Blanche instead. The tale then transforms the accidental death into a haunting by a white-robed woman with an arrow through her heart. The folklore shows how later visitors encounter castles through romantic tragedy and ghost tradition alongside military history.
