Labour, disarmament, and British naval interests

The Labour government pursued naval limitation as a disarmament measure that also protected Britain's naval requirements.

Notes

Ramsay MacDonald, Arthur Henderson, Albert Victor Alexander, and Wedgwood Benn gave the British delegation a distinctly Labour character. Their public commitments to peace and disarmament coexisted with treaty terms intended to preserve Britain's ability to meet its naval needs. Henderson was especially committed to peace and still pressed for an agreement aligned with British foreign policy. Naval limitation here combined a disarmament programme with national strategy.
