Laboratory tools and process control underpinned naval explosives

Explosive chemistry depended on sustained research, repeatable production processes, trained specialists, and even improvements in laboratory glassware.

Notes

One chemical formula was only part of the industrial system needed to make an effective explosive. Sustained work by many people produced the chemistry and the repeatable processes needed to use it. Specialised flasks, beakers, and other glassware also had to improve, as the contrast between medieval vessels and nineteenth-century laboratory equipment shows. Naval firepower depended on a wider research and manufacturing network whose tools, expertise, and process control reduced unwanted variables.
