Krab was designed to carry sixty mines through horizontal galleries as well as bow torpedoes, making it an early purpose-built submarine minelayer. Construction delays allowed German UC boats to enter service first, but Krab retained priority as a purpose-designed concept. Russia had concluded that mines and coordinated coastal defenses produced its most promising results against Japan. The boat reflects genuine operational learning within a shipbuilding system that remained slow and uneven.
