A United Nations mandate supported coalition intervention, but damaged or inadequate airfields could not always provide forward air cover. Aircraft carriers could move air support with the ground forces. Sea control made amphibious manoeuvre, including Inchon, possible and carried the heavy equipment and supplies on which the multinational force depended. Except for Chinese forces crossing from the north, the combatants and their equipment largely reached Korea by sea. Logistics and mobility were often more consequential than shore bombardment.
