Königsberg's mine rails conflicted with its guns

Königsberg's stern gun arrangement and minelaying system interfered with one another while sensitive loading made damage stability a serious concern.

Notes

The Königsberg class combined light-cruiser scouting with minelaying, but its gun arrangement complicated both roles. Mines stowed on their rails could jump under the blast of the after guns and potentially detonate, so carrying them constrained use of most of the main battery. German assessments also regarded the ships as only moderately good sea boats, with improper internal loading capable of creating a capsize risk. Explosions and shifting stores could reproduce that dangerous loading condition in combat. The design therefore allowed its weapons to obstruct one another while leaving serious concerns about stability after damage.
