The ships could appear competitive with contemporary light cruisers when compared by gun count alone. Nine 150 mm weapons put them on paper near a three-turret Crown Colony and ahead of a Leander in nominal barrels. The comparison nevertheless favors the Leander because an opponent facing a Königsberg could concentrate fire abaft the second funnel, where so many hazards were grouped. The armoured deck and belt did not erase the consequences of that internal arrangement. Specifications and weapon counts alone did not determine fighting value.

Paper firepower versus practical vulnerability
Nine 150 mm guns gave the class impressive nominal firepower, but the comparison favors a Leander as the safer choice in a real fight.
