The British Jamaica Squadron comprised Cornwall, Lennox, Tilbury, Stratford, Warwick, Canterbury, and Oxford. Cornwall and Lennox supplied the heaviest batteries, while most of the line consisted of sixty-gun ships and Oxford carried fifty guns. This mix mattered because the strongest ships could not deliver their weight until the formation brought them into range. Captain Edward Clark of Canterbury also introduces the long family traditions of commanding and building ships that connected individual officers to the Royal Navy as an institution.
