Knowledge and wisdom in historical study

Historical study needs both knowledge of past events and the wisdom to judge that knowledge and act on it.

Question

Why do historians end up in the knowledge-versus-wisdom debate?

Short answer

Because good decisions require knowledge of past events and the wisdom to analyse what that knowledge means.

Notes

Historical study gives people knowledge of past events and an understanding of what happened. Knowledge alone does not guarantee good judgment, while wisdom without knowledge has no foundation in the truth. Analytical training is intended to help students think through what they know and develop wisdom. Historians can only hope that this capacity for judgment is passed on.
