Kirov-class cruisers combined Italian influence with Soviet priorities

Kirov-class armament, a conditional Italian speed guarantee, and limited endurance show how Project 26 suited Baltic and Black Sea operations.

Notes

The six Kirov-class cruisers, introduced as Project 26, all survived the Second World War. Nine 180 mm guns in three triple turrets gave them a heavy main battery, accompanied by dual-purpose guns, torpedoes, mines, and depth charges. Their reported top speed was 36 knots against an Italian guarantee of 37 knots, but that guarantee depended on keeping displacement below 7,200 tons. At 7,890 tons standard, the ships exceeded that condition, although the extra weight is doubted as a complete explanation for the missing knot. A range of 3,750 nautical miles at 18 knots made Baltic and Black Sea missions more attractive than long Pacific cruises.
