Chapter · 49:25-51:16

Kinkaid, Nagumo, and the forces at Santa Cruz

Rear Admiral Thomas Kinkaid faced Nagumo's larger Japanese force with two American fleet carriers and a smaller supporting formation.

Notes

Rear Admiral Thomas Kinkaid commanded the immediate American carrier force, facing Chuichi Nagumo, characterized here as an offensively minded but conservative commander. The Japanese order of battle gives four carriers, four battleships, eight heavy cruisers, two light cruisers, and 24 destroyers. The American force had two fleet carriers, one battleship, three heavy cruisers, three light cruisers, and 14 destroyers. The initial comparison gives nearly 200 Japanese aircraft against 136 American aircraft. These totals establish the apparent imbalance, but the ships' technology, air-group composition, and organization affected how much of that strength each side could use.
