King William's War and the contest for Canada

The Battle of Hudson Bay is placed within King William's War, the under-resourced North American struggle connected to the Nine Years' War.

Notes

Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville's 1697 action belonged to the wider Anglo-French contest for Canada during King William's War. European governments supplied few additional resources, leaving commercial interests and their local partners to carry much of the conflict. Indigenous communities traded with both sides and with the Dutch, which preserved room to maneuver within the competition. The Peace of Ryswick ended the wider war on status quo ante bellum terms and restored the prewar position despite the cost of local fighting. Trade networks, local diplomacy, and company power shaped the fighting alongside formal state strategy.
