King John, Henry III and the Lincoln campaign

John Paul Davis's study of England's civil war is recommended for its account of William Marshal and the 1217 struggle for Lincoln.

Notes

The selected passage follows French pressure on key castles and William Marshal's counterstroke against a larger besieging force. His approach to Lincoln exploited route choice, contact with the castle garrison and attacks through different gates. Fighting then spread through the upper and lower town before the rebel force collapsed. The account makes the campaign legible through movement, urban geography, command decisions and the political consequences of victory.
