Why did the King George V class use quadruple 14-inch turrets instead of four triples?
Short answerThree quadruples were chosen as the best route to twelve guns within treaty displacement, but one mounting had to become a twin when the design would not fit.
NotesThe designers wanted twelve 14-inch guns, and three quadruple mountings appeared lighter than four complete triple-turret systems once barbettes, handling rooms, and machinery were counted. The attraction was therefore not that quadruple turrets were simple, but that the whole battery might fit inside the treaty limit. When the intended forward quadruple mounting could not be made to work within the design constraints, it was reduced to a twin. The final ten-gun layout records the collision between the original twelve-gun ambition and the weight available.
