Kimmel belonged to an unusually interconnected military family. He married into the Kinkaid family, had three sons, and counted future US Seventh Fleet commander Thomas Kinkaid as his brother-in-law. Kimmel's father, Manning Marius Kimmel, served in the Union Army at First Bull Run, resigned, and then joined the Confederate Army before going to Mexico. The elder Kimmel was one of only a handful of officers to serve in both armies and later worked as a civil engineer.
