Husband Kimmel's aggressive family tradition is traced back to his father, Manning M. Kimmel. He served as a Union officer at the Battle of Bull Run, resigned his commission, and then fought for the Confederacy. He was one of only four officers identified as serving on both sides of the American Civil War. After the Confederate defeat, he moved to Mexico and worked as a civil engineer before continuing that profession elsewhere.
