Kildin torpedoes develop an ASW role

SET-53 and SET-53M add passive acoustic ASW capability, with uncertainty over Kildin's initial torpedo fit.

Notes

Kildin's initial torpedo fit remains uncertain. The likely starting weapons are earlier 53-56 variants intended mainly for surface attack, rather than an immediate fit of the new ASW torpedo. SET-53 enters service in 1958, the same year as Kildin, but whether the class receives it that early is disputed. SET-53M follows in 1964, extending the development of passive acoustic homing for anti-submarine work. Some later torpedoes in the period reach about fourteen kilometers, giving the destroyers another way to engage submarines.
