Arrowhead builds on the capable Iver Huitfeldt design and its Danish experience with StanFlex. StanFlex modules can be craned off and replaced, with reconfiguration described as taking a day or less. Denmark retained the concept and is pursuing a newer version, despite limited success selling it abroad. MEKO succeeded with a different promise: customers begin with a common core design and choose modules while the ship is being designed and built. Other attempts at rapid in-service reconfiguration have struggled despite strong interest in modular language. Light frigates would benefit most from genuine mission changes because they provide numbers and adaptable space. Suggested uses include mine-laying, mine-sweeping support, amphibious support, and extra boats for operations against piracy or drug smuggling. Those are possibilities for adaptable ships, while the delivered platforms mainly provide space and dependable propulsion, power, command, and sensor systems.

StanFlex, MEKO, and two kinds of modularity
The Iver Huitfeldt lineage contrasts StanFlex's rapid in-service module swaps with MEKO's more commercially successful design-stage customization.
