Project 17B ambitions and the Indian frigate weapons mix

An estimated 8,000-ton Project 17B provides a starting point for examining the Indian frigate family's missiles, guns, and ASW weapons, alongside proposals for a heavier fit.

Notes

Project 17B is described as a planned third iteration of approximately 8,000 tons with about 48 vertical-launch cells. A more heavily armed alternative would start frigates around 64 cells, destroyers around 128, and cruisers closer to 192; these are personal armament preferences. The wider Project 17 family discussion includes BrahMos anti-ship missiles and the Indian-Israeli Barak 8 air-defence system. The existing eight-weapon BrahMos load prompts a recommendation to raise that to at least 16 while carrying 48 Barak weapons. The gun and close-in fit combines an OTO Melara 76 mm weapon with AK-630 mounts. RBU-6000 launchers add options in shallow water against submarines or uncrewed threats, while torpedoes and a shipboard helicopter extend the ASW layer. A suggested heavier fit would also have three each of the 76 mm and AK-630 systems to improve coverage and resilience. These recommendations describe a preferred future fit rather than an approved configuration.
