Project 17 develops through the Shivalik class, Project 17A Nilgiris, and the planned Project 17B ships. Indian planning begins with the expectation that the navy may have to operate alone, while allied help remains useful when available. That assumption pushes each frigate toward a flexible mix of self-defence, task-group support, and offensive reach. The ships can reinforce carrier or surface groups and also conduct visible deployments across the Indian Ocean and farther abroad. Each generation reduces acoustic, infrared, and other signatures while increasing capability. The line has also moved from Indianized versions of Russian design ideas toward a recognizable national style, strengthening the ships' value for overseas presence.
