Why FREMM attracted so many national variants

A useful core hull, adaptable mission fit, and credible independent capability made FREMM attractive to navies with very different patrol and combat needs.

Notes

FREMM can patrol dispersed territories, support fire missions, hunt submarines, contribute to air defence, and enter contested waters without needing an entire task group beside it. Its firepower is intended to get the ship itself into and out of difficult situations; protecting an entire formation is a larger requirement. The Italian variants make that flexibility especially visible through their layered weapons. The program snapshot gives 66 planned ships across several customers, 27 French and American cancellations, and 22 active hulls. Orders were still evolving, so the figures describe the position presented in this comparison. The design's appeal comes from a sound common base that can accept different national priorities. Conceptually, it is a higher-end development of the MEKO approach to modular warship families.
