AK-630 traverse limits and overlapping close defence

A gun can cover every bearing without rotating continuously; AK-630, Goalkeeper, and an Oto Melara 40 mm system illustrate why traverse limits matter when switching targets.

Notes

A well-maintained AK-630 can put a large volume of fire into the direction of an incoming threat, and the Indian mounts are reported to receive that care. Its elevation range is recalled as roughly -12 to +88 degrees, with the figures given from memory. Traverse is described as 180 degrees to either side of the normal position, giving full bearing coverage without continuous rotation. Crossing the traverse stop to engage another target can therefore require a long slew around the opposite way. Goalkeeper and Oto Melara's 40 mm system are cited as alternatives with continuous 360-degree traverse. A possible AK-630 modification for continuous rotation is mentioned, but whether it has entered use remains uncertain. Multiple mounts can compensate for the stop and preserve overlapping coverage. A preference for at least three mounts follows from that concern about target switching and redundancy.
