Kentish Knock: damage, grounding, and a collapsing Dutch force

The Commonwealth's heavier ships inflicted severe damage, and the Dutch position deteriorated further after darkness as ships and captains left the force.

Notes

Kentish Knock was not a clean annihilation because Sovereign and James grounded on the sandbank, while Resolution and Dolphin were briefly surrounded after pressing too far ahead. Commonwealth ships rescued their admiral, whereas damage to Prince William disrupted De With's ability to direct his fleet. Maria was captured, Gorcum was abandoned and then recovered by the Dutch, and Wapen van Alkmaar exploded after apparently catching fire. More Dutch ships slipped away overnight, reducing the force from roughly sixty-two to forty-nine while Blake received reinforcements and rose to eighty-four.
