Kemys’s death leaves Raleigh with the expedition’s failure

Raleigh rejects Kemys’s explanation but fails to secure him, and the deputy’s suicide removes the subordinate who might have answered for the attack on Spain.

Notes

After the expedition finds no gold and Raleigh’s son is killed, Lawrence Kemys returns to report the failure. Raleigh rejects his explanation yet neither watches nor arrests him. Kemys shoots and then stabs himself, removing the deputy who might have answered for fighting the Spanish. This failure of detail and subordinate management leaves Raleigh with no treasure, no son, no second-in-command, and no victory. When Raleigh reaches England, the Spanish ambassador Count Gondomar quickly presses for the old death sentence to be carried out.
