Karlsruhe's training cruises and welded-hull weakness

Karlsruhe projected German naval presence on cadet cruises, but storm damage exposed weaknesses in her largely welded hull.

Notes

Karlsruhe's early career was dominated by cadet cruises to Africa, South America, Japan, and other distant ports, making her one of the German Navy's most visible representatives. Günther Lütjens commanded her from September 1934 to September 1935 during those training years. A tropical storm in 1936 aggravated weaknesses in the largely welded hull and forced emergency work in San Diego followed by a major German overhaul. Strengthening slightly increased beam and displacement, while the refit added an aircraft catapult, twin 88 mm mounts, and anti-aircraft directors. Her return to Spanish Civil War patrols links training, naval diplomacy, construction risk, and modernization in one interwar career.
