Karel Doorman shows the reach of a joint support ship

The Dutch Karel Doorman combines long-range transport, aviation, medical, command, and replenishment functions in a North Atlantic-sized hull.

Notes

At roughly 27,800 tons, Karel Doorman is much larger than the compact regional LPDs discussed earlier. She carries extensive lane metres for vehicles and containers, a two-spot flight deck, a hangar for several helicopters, command rooms, and surgical facilities. That package supports expeditionary transport and fleet sustainment even though the ship is not presented as a conventional beach-assault LPD. The example shows why harsh oceans and long deployment distances push European support ships toward greater displacement and endurance.
