A kamikaze imprint identified a Ki-51 Sonia

An aircraft-shaped imprint left on Sussex during Far East operations was used to identify the attacker as a Ki-51 Sonia.

Notes

Sussex supported operations in the Netherlands East Indies after joining the Far Eastern war. A kamikaze aircraft struck the cruiser and left a recognizable imprint on the ship. That physical mark was used to identify the attacker as a Ki-51 Sonia. Battle damage could preserve evidence about an aircraft even when the attack itself was too fast and violent for certain visual identification.
