Kamchatka and a fleet without friendly ports

The Russian repair ship Kamchatka illustrates the severe support problem created when the Baltic Fleet sailed around the world toward the Russo-Japanese War without a chain of friendly bases.

Notes

Kamchatka was a response to the Baltic Fleet's extraordinary voyage to the Pacific. Russia lacked the ports and bases needed to support the force along its route, so supplies and some repair capability had to travel with it. The ship formed part of the fleet's attempt to replace an absent shore network. Her troubled reputation does not erase the operational requirement that produced her.
