Kalinin becomes a Pacific Fleet status ship

Component shortages and a poor dry dock delayed Kalinin, but she later became a prominent training, gunnery, and fleet-visit platform.

Notes

Kalinin was assembled at the Amur yard from components produced at Leningrad's Shipyard No. 189. Retreats and disruption in European Russia, shortages of propellers and aircraft equipment, and a badly built dry dock prolonged completion and kept her from the 1945 campaign. After the war she won Pacific Fleet training prizes and conducted gunnery trials observed by Rodion Malinovsky and other senior commanders. She later hosted Khrushchev, Bulganin, Mikoyan, and Admiral Nikolai Kuznetsov during a 1954 Pacific Fleet visit. Those demonstrations made the cruiser a visible symbol of Soviet power as well as a training platform. Her mixed British, American, and Soviet radar fit, together with the delayed catapult and substitute anti-aircraft guns, shows how wartime supply shaped the completed ship.
