Kaiser Wilhelm II and the Heligoland grievance

The alternate history makes Heligoland a personal and political obsession for Kaiser Wilhelm II, shaping German diplomatic and naval priorities.

Notes

Wilhelm II's historic delight in receiving Heligoland made the island a uniquely potent symbol. The portrait combines his strong desire to emulate Britain with hostility toward it and a deep need for personal prestige. The 1890 bargain worked partly because British negotiators understood how badly Wilhelm wanted the island and could extract wider concessions before placing it on the table. Denial of that prize could make its recovery a recurring demand on German ministers and service chiefs. In this interpretation, an emotionally charged objective competes with Germany's other diplomatic, colonial, and military needs.
