Chapter · 2:54-4:40

Kaiser-class armor, range, and Germany's response

Germany answers Neptune and Colossus with the heavier Kaiser class, combining five twin 12-inch turrets with strong armor and long range.

Notes

The Kaiser class is Germany's direct answer to Neptune and Colossus and broadly copies their five-turret layout. Five twin mountings retain 12-inch guns on a ship of about 24,724 tons normal and 27,000 tons full load. Sixteen Thornycroft water-tube boilers and three turbine sets produce 21 knots, though the choice to retain three shafts is questionable. A range of about 7,900 nautical miles and a 13.8-inch belt make the design look stronger than its British rivals on paper. Germany improves protection and endurance while staying within the 12-inch-gun standard.
