Chapter · 52:25-54:18

Type D's speed and the limits of fleet escort

Type D's modest speed increase is judged insufficient for fleet escort, particularly without effective fire control.

Notes

The corrected displacement figures given here are 757 tons for Type C and 752 tons for Type D. Type D closely resembled Type C but reached 17.5 knots, with a stated range of roughly 4,000-4,500 nautical miles at 16 knots. Type C was intended for convoys, while Type D was theoretically intended to accompany the fleet. Limited speed and ineffective fire control made convoy work the more suitable assignment in this assessment. Fleet deployment reflected the shortage of alternatives.
