The four Shimushu-class ships entered service in 1940-41. Etorofu and Mikura followed in 1943-44, with Ukuru completions in 1944-45. The newer ships were more capable, but their late arrival weakened the practical benefit of the improvement. Mikura and Ukuru had a stated range of about 5,000 nautical miles at 16 knots. Standard displacement had risen towards roughly 955 tons. Better designs were reaching service after the earlier need had become acute.

More capable escorts arriving in 1943-45
The class progression improves capability, but commissioning dates place most of the newer escorts late in the war.
