The Kaba design used triple-expansion machinery driving three shafts, with a stated speed of 30 knots and a range of 1,600 nautical miles at 15 knots. Armament included a 4.7-inch gun and two twin 18-inch torpedo launchers. The same armament is tentatively identified on the ships built for France. Japanese ships of this class deployed with the cruiser Akashi to Malta to support Royal Navy anti-submarine operations in the Mediterranean. That service gave their crews practical experience of the anti-submarine capabilities needed during the war.
