Scheer's second approach and the visibility trap

One reconstruction attributes Scheer's return east to a mistaken picture of the British fleet's position.

Notes

The Jutland Scandal account questions whether Scheer deliberately intended to renew battle when he turned east again. It proposes that smoke and mist had led him to place the British fleet too far south. On that interpretation, he hoped to pass astern of it, improve his position relative to his base, and gain an advantage from the evening light. Instead, his leading ships approached the centre of the British formation and came under concentrated fire.
