Jutland's numbers expose Germany's starting deficit

The historical battle-line totals show how far Germany begins behind and why Britain's lighter capital ships did not need to join the main line.

Notes

Jutland shows the scale of the starting imbalance before the counterfactual building race begins. The Royal Navy brought 28 dreadnought battleships, more than Germany's total of 27 capital ships even after German pre-dreadnoughts are counted. Britain had 37 capital ships once its battlecruisers were included, so Invincible-class ships did not need to accept battle-line risks against the High Seas Fleet. Their greater value lay in maneuvering around the engagement while the overwhelmingly superior British battle line contained the German force.
