Chapter · 39:23-43:37

Jutland gunnery and ammunition uncertainty

At Jutland the Second Battle Squadron held Jellicoe's left, but the Orion-class ships' results and ammunition expenditure remain difficult to reconstruct with confidence.

Notes

The Second Battle Squadron held the Grand Fleet's port side, the flank nearer Germany, where Jellicoe relied on its experience and training. Conqueror and Thunderer fired on Wiesbaden and Derfflinger, while Monarch and Orion scored hits on Konig, Markgraf and Lutzow. Some apparent failures may have been misses or shells that struck without detonating, and the surviving accounts do not settle the issue. The often repeated claim that none fired more than 57 rounds is also uncertain because the original wording may refer to individual guns or salvos rather than a ship's total expenditure. Stock rotation may have assigned the class some of the oldest 13.5-inch shells, giving another reason to question ammunition performance.
