Chapter · 1:02:30-1:09:50

Jutland became two mutual ambushes

Beatty chased Hipper toward Scheer, then reversed and drew the pursuing High Seas Fleet toward Jellicoe's Grand Fleet.

Notes

The battle unfolded as an ambush followed by a counter-ambush. Beatty's battlecruisers followed Hipper's First Scouting Group south until they met the High Seas Fleet, then turned north. Beatty did not promptly signal his turn to the Fifth Battle Squadron, which recognized the High Seas Fleet for itself and followed under pressure. Scheer pursued because this appeared to be the long-awaited chance to destroy a large piece of the Royal Navy, even though he was tail-chasing faster ships. The Germans never seriously considered that Britain might be setting the same kind of trap, and their pursuit carried them toward the Grand Fleet.
