Junon from French frigate to British veteran

The Minerve-class Junon entered the action short of guns, then enjoyed a much longer career under British names after capture.

Notes

Junon was a Minerve-class frigate of roughly 700 tons, armed in French service with twenty-eight 18-pounders and twelve 8-pounders. At least four of the 18-pounders had been landed to assist the army before the action. Ordered in 1781, she was laid down and launched in 1782 but did not commission until 1786, an interval associated here with French preparation delays. Captured after thirteen years of French service, she became HMS Princess Charlotte and was renamed Andromache in 1812. The Royal Navy retained her until she was broken up in 1828, giving her twenty-nine years under British ownership and employing her extensively. Lord Keith used the ship again in 1812. A description attributed to him praises her as a fusion of British and French construction, but that attribution comes from a source explicitly treated as too unreliable for unqualified academic use.
