The entry has to weave real history into a coherent account of how the surviving ship or class changes events. The top ten would be discussed with selected passages read aloud, while full publication remained at each writer's discretion so a promising idea could still be developed elsewhere. Two prizes recognize that technical historical integration and emotionally effective storytelling are related but distinct achievements. A rigorous paper can excel by tracing consequences carefully, while a more narrative entry can make the ship's altered career compelling. The judging scheme leaves room for evidence, causation, and story to work together without making any one of them the sole criterion.
